In fact I just realized that I hadn't posted in almost a year which is horribly disgusting. During this time I've made a couple trips and a new roomate, Bling Crosby, joined my cousin Gilly and I (pics here and on the website soon). Althought it has been a few months since my trips there, one of my favorite places to be is Yellowstone National Park. I love everything about that place; viewing wildlife, the landscape, I even love the sulfur egg fart smell. Mmmm… egg salad sandwiches! Fortunately this past year I able to go there and have a blast, and I even saw a grizzly in the wild for the first time. During some of my previous visits I had camped at Madison Junction Campgrounds, however this past Labor Day I was very lucky to have stayed at the Madison Hotel. The Madison, in West Yellowstone, is a block and a half from the west entrance of the park. Their card reads “Restful Accommodations Rustic Atmosphere” and when they say rustic they mean rustic. It is a hotel with history; it is one of the, if not the, oldest hotel in West Yellowstone. Staying there made me think of going to an older cabin with friends and relaxing for a week. It isn’t new with all the new gadgets and accommodations but it is worth the stay. The following is from their website:
THE HISTORIC MADISON HOTEL
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places
by the United States Department of Interior
The Historic Madison Hotel reflects the rich history of early tourism to Yellowstone National Park. Built in 1912, the Madison Hotel began as a two-story rectangular building of simple log construction with saddle-notched corner timbering and a prominent front dormer. A cut-stone fireplace in the downstairs lobby warmed the original six upstairs rooms. Each room had a pitcher, a washbasin and a chamber pot. Water came from a well across the street. The hotel expanded in 1921 adding fourteen rooms, a bar and a dance floor. There was no running water until the 1930's. Today The Madison Hotel has most of the amenities you would expect to find in a modern hotel. Log support columns and beams, wood floors, light fixtures, the stone fireplace, and many of the room furnishings remain original. Although not the first hotel in West Yellowstone, the Madison is the only hotel that remains from the early days of tourism in Yellowstone National Park. www.madisonhotelmotel.com

Another place to check out while you are in West Yellowstone is the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. Great information on bears and wolves and their life and importance to the Yellowstone area and world-class exhibits. The habitats that the wolves and bears are in, allow you to view them easily and closely. However being an owl, my favorite was a presentation on birds of prey. During which I ran into my cousin Tegan. He seemed to be doing well, a few years back during a really violent thunderstorm he was blown out of his nest. A trucker rescued him and now he has a pretty sweet gig. Anyway great place, great information, and fantastic exhibits. Check out their website: www.grizzlydiscoveryctr.com

Colonel

Creation

So this image has been a source of debate, it hasn’t appeared in a regular spot on the website however it was one of several random images that appeared on the website’s first page a few months ago. It is very unlikely that many or anyone saw it. To me it is too funny to pass up posting. The hardest part about creating the painting was making the model look better than he did. So with the intention to make you laugh and perhaps squirm a bit at the site of such a pasty white boy…

Colonel

Owl Humor

Ran across this Rubes cartoon, enjoy! To appease my conscience while posting this comic, I am including a little plug for where to find Rubes via the internet He also has books and is published in hundreds of newspapers and magazines (Progressive Dairyman) If you would like to see more of Rubes go to: http://www.creators.com/comics/rubes.html?comicname=rub
Colonel S.

Is Anything On?

So the other day as I pecked away at the ol' keyboard with the T.V. on in the background, I thought to myself is that a girl or a guy? The "that" being one of the contestants on American Idol. At first glance and listen it could of gone either way like most of the contestants I saw. Then the channel was changed and I realized I didn't care that the channel was changed. Not only did I not care to hear the performances or watch the show, I was so uninterested in the program I didn't want to find the answer to the question of what "it" was (guy, I found out the next morning from a radio program). Then I began to think about T.V. in general and thought, wow, there really is nothing on. Think about it, one network will think of a "new" idea and do several versions of it (C.S.I., C.S.I.:Miami, C.S.I.:NY, Law and Order, Law and Order:SVU, etc.) or that same idea will be used on all the networks with their little "twists" think doctor/hospital shows. Then the thought came to mind that the writers are back certainly they will have gotten inspiration during the time away in the strike, but that thought died quickly strangled by the fact that these are the writers that wrote that other crap in the first place. Perhaps I am missing the happy land of cable or satellite T.V. but I doubt it. Yeah its nice sometimes to sit down relax and just watch a little boob tube, but at the end of the day does it really matter to you if Joe Dirt, from Littletown, U.S.A. wins $285,000 on Deal or No Deal? Does it really change your life if pretend agent so-and-so defuses a bomb in time, the fictional criminal finally is caught by the D.N.A. he left on a Q-tip in a garbage can in the neighbor's bathroom two houses down from the crime scene, this character is finally dating that character, or what's-his-name got voted off? No, its just entertainment. So who cares if nothing or something is on, we all have better things to do right! Who's with me?

Alright, now that I've got that off my chest, could you pass me the remote? I'm just going to check if anything is on. If you haven't, mystery puzzles are like a normal puzzle except there is no picture to look at to put it together, there is included with the puzzle a short story to read and from the finished puzzle and the story you solve a mystery. It is actually quite fun and extremely frustrating/addicting. With the help of some friends, shout out to Darren C, and some family members, Jeff and Barb, this particular mystery puzzle was solved. I hope that I don't ruin this for anyone, I am putting it here as a trophy to those who labored in solving it but were unable to see its completion.

Puzzles are like people, some have weirder looking pieces than others.
CHS

Meanwhile At The Fortress of Solitude....

To find out where this is enter the following in the Google Earth search field: 42.596681, -114.471907 First person to leave a comment on this blog with the correct name of the location will receive a handsome graphite drawing of an owl. Clarence is told that George needs his help and he asks, "Is he sick?" One of the other angels responds, "No, worse he is discouraged." All of us at times have been discouraged to some degree, hopefully not to the level of George Bailey. Life throws difficulties and discouragement at us constantly, it can begin to wear us down, make foolish decisions, and even give up on things we want most. Fortunately we have the opportunity every year during the Christmas season to remember that there is hope. We can reflect on the words of the angel of the Lord who said to shepherds, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." I hope that this Christmas Season finds you and yours happy and healthy, and that the hope of Christ will remain with you throughout the year. The following a friend sent me and wish to share it with you here.

The Three Levels of Christmas

      By: William B. Smart

This is a beautiful time of the year. We love the excitement, the giving spirit, the special awareness of and appreciation for family and friends, the feeling of love and brotherhood that blesses our gatherings and Christmastime. In all the joyousness, it is well to reflect that Christmas comes at three levels.

Let’s call the first the Santa Clause level. It’s the level of Christmas tree and holly, of whispered secrets and colorful packages, of candle light and rich food and warm open houses. It’s carolers in the shopping malls, excited children and weary, but loving parents. It’s a lovely time of special warmth and caring and giving. It’s the level at which we eat too much and spend too much, do too much and enjoy every minute of it. We love the Santa Clause level of Christmas.

But there is a higher, more beautiful level. Let’s call it the “Silent Night” level. It’s the level of all our glorious Christmas carols, of that beloved familiar story. “Now in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus…” It’s the level of the crowded inn and the silent, holy, moment in a dark stable when the son of Man came to Earth. It’s the shepherds on steep, bare hills near Bethlehem, angels with their glad tidings, the new star in the east, wise men traveling far, in search of the Holy One. How beautiful and meaningful it is, how infinitely poorer we would be without this sacred level of Christmas.

The trouble is…these two levels don’t last. They can’t.

Twelve days of Christmas at the first level is about all most of us can stand. It’s too intense, too extravagant. The tree dies out and needles fall. The candles burn down. The beautiful wrappings go out with the trash, the carolers are up on the ski slopes, the toys break, and the biggest day in the stores for the entire year is exchange day, December 26th. The feast is over and the dieting begins. But the lonely and the hungry are with us still, perhaps lonelier and hungrier than before. Lovely and joyous as the first level of Christmas is, there will come day, very soon, when mother will put away the decorations and vacuum the living room and think, “Thank goodness that this over for another year.”

Even the second level, the level of the baby Jesus, can’t last. How many times this season can you sing, “Silent Night?” The angels and the star, and the shepherd, even the silent, sacred mystery of the holy night itself, can’t long satisfy humanity’s basic need. The man who keeps Christ in the manger will, in the end, be disappointed and empty.

No, for Christmas to last all year long, for it to grow in beauty and meaning and purpose, for it to have the power to change lives, we must celebrate it at the third level, that of the adult Christ. It is at this level—not as an infant—that our Savior brings his gifts of lasting joy, lasting peace, lasting hope. It was the adult Christ who reached out and touched the untouchable, who loved the unlovable, who so loved us all that even in his agony on the cross, he prayed forgiveness for his enemies.

This is Christ, creator of world without number, who wept because so many of us lack affection for each other…and then willingly gave his life for all of us, including those for whom he wept. This is the Christ, the adult Christ, who gave us the perfect example, and asked us to follow him. Accepting that invitation is the way, the only way that all mankind can celebrate Christmas all year and all life long.

Have A Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year! I had meant to get this up around Thanksgiving time, but its not quite Christmas so I am ok. This is the infamous Thanksgiving shot, I say infamous because of the usual reaction to it (OOH NASTY!). I tried my best to find the original image of just the turkey but I could not get it. I have posted what I found, you can see I am moving the cabinets on the right and removing the window on the left, but you can see the shot in its infancy and the final shot. My thanks to the chef for being willing to hold up the turkey to get this photo. Later I took shots of myself in similar lighting at the proper angle and with a dash of paprika and some Photoshop, tada!

Here comes Christmas and before you know it New Years Day, I love the holidays! Eating too much, visiting friends and family, undoing the top button on your pants and eating more, christmas carols, lights, and of course Christmas Movies!
Here are my favorite ones in no particular order:
A Christmas Story
Its a Wonderful Life
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer
Christmas Vacation
Elf
Holiday Inn
I think I may be missing one or two, What are your favorites?

November Already

Hey everyone! Its been way too long since I last posted, way too long. In fact all this moving around business has left me a bit drained. Kevin and Jackie decided to move to Twin Falls, Idaho, something about Kevin was unemployed then got a new job or whatever I don't know I wasn't really paying attention. Anyway I moved with them, decided free room and board was too hard to pass up. Yeah I'm a moocher. So since right now I don't have any cool new pictures to share, I don't have them ready yet, I figured I could hold an owl show. I would like to see any cool owl pics/drawings/stories you may have and want to share. I will put your stories/pics/drawings up here on the blog for the world to see. I might even try and send some of my favorites some prizes. Just send your submission to chs@kevindbrown.com
Thanks!
Colonel Sanders

My Eye

I went camping with the Brown family the first weekend of August. We camped up in Island Park, at a place called Box Canyon. The campgrounds were nice, well kept, and not very full. I think the noisy smelly Browns chased the other campers off. Anyhoo, it was fun until I lost my eye. I was with Kevin when it happened, the big oaf nearly fell off a ledge, luckily his ginormous foot caught and he was able to rescue us, minus my eye. He was bleeding all over me and walking back to camp when he realized that my eye was missing. So I made him go back and find it, he got there just in time. A tasty meal of a rodent was eyeing it(no pun intended) when he got there. He was able to rescue my eye and after a surgically precise application of hot glue my eye is 100%. Anyway the rest of camping was fantastic, I highly recommend Island Park as a camping destination. Enjoy the pics.
